Origin labels confuse even careful shoppers. Made in India, Assembled in India and Packaged in India sound similar but describe very different levels of domestic production.
Made in India
Typically means the product was substantially manufactured in India — raw materials processed, components fabricated, or goods wholly produced in an Indian facility. For textiles, this might mean yarn spun and fabric woven domestically. For food, it means processed from Indian agricultural inputs.
Assembled in India
Common in electronics and appliances. Imported components (chips, displays, casings) are assembled in an Indian plant. Some value and jobs are created locally, but a large share of the supply chain may still be overseas. Brands should disclose this; buyers should ask.
Packaged or Marketed in India
The weakest claim. The product may be imported in bulk and only repackaged or labelled here. Little or no domestic manufacturing value is added.

- Read the full label — not just the front badge
- Check manufacturer name and city on the product page
- Ask the seller: "What percentage is manufactured in India?"
- Prefer categories with strong domestic production — handloom, spices, engineering goods from Indian industrial clusters
